As a city famous for gambling and tourism, Macau attracts countless people from all over the world each year. However, compared with the new developments in Cotai and other parts of the city, today's Inner Harbour docklands seem to be a forgotten corner, so cold and cheerless that people feel distressed. Looking at the Inner Habour dockland today, it is hard to imagine that it was once the most prosperous area in Macau. Perhaps only the modern buildings built here in the 1950s and 1960s can tell this history. These buildings grew up with the brilliant period of the area, experienced all kinds of wind and rain together, and also fell silent together with the Inner Habour. Therefore, the establishment of cultural connection map will revive these modern buildings in people's memory, and deepen their understanding of the Inner Habour docklands history and its connections with the modern buildings of the 1950s and 1960s.
With the theme of "Lives in Between: Macau Modern Architecture", we have established a cultural connection map by comparing the Inner Habour in the last century and today. Through interviews with people in the community and the collection of words, old documents and images, the inner port in the prosperous period and the surrounding communities can be recreated, so as to discuss the reasons for the decline of the inner port and the feasibility of revitalizing the lustre of the inner port.
Taking the modern architecture in the community as the theme, it aims to show the connection between modern architecture and people in the contemporary community. Through the description of the modern architecture in the inner port area, it can arouse the resonance of the public to the inner port area and draw more people's attention to the problems in the inner port area. In addition, as the leading role of the Inner Habour architecture in the 1950s and 1960s, we also hope to inspire people to understand the relationship between buildings and people from a more comprehensive perspective and encourage the public to think about the relationship between buildings, communities and people from a more humanistic perspective.
The project “Lives in Between: Macau Modern Architecture Ecosystem” looks into Macau’s living spaces and places in the context of its evolution as a diverse and multi-layered city from the past into the current modern city. By focusing on ten Modern Architectural Heritage buildings in Macau, and by interweaving them into the local historical, social, and cultural fabric, it contributes to the better understanding of the significance of modern heritage sites. It intends to promote public awareness towards the conservation of significant Modern Architectural Heritage of Macau and its living context through a seminar, an exhibition, and an immersive walking tour.
