Ponte Cais

PONTE CAIS N.º 16

Situated at the junction of Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and Inner Harbour, Ponte Cais No.16 was one of the most famous piers in Macau. More than 100 years ago, it was the main port for exporting coolies, importing and exporting opium. As recording in 1569, Portuguese traders trafficked Chinese into coolies and sold them to Cuba, Peru and other places. At the same time, thanks to the maritime prohibition policies of the Ming and Qing dynasties, Macau became the only port where foreigners could live and trade for a long time. As a result, opium was transported from Turkey to Macau by the Portuguese as early as 1729. Even the British originally sold opium to the Chinese market through Macau.

 

The coolies and opium trading promoted the development of the gambling industry. In order to manage the gambling industry, the government set gambling patent rights. In order to make it easier for tourists to gamble, in 1948, Fu Deyong funded the reconstruction of Ponte Cais No.16. Ponte Cais No.16 was transformed from a wooden wharf into a cement wharf, which was designed as a clear cross. He also managed the liner, making Ponte Cais No.16 the main terminal for passengers from Hong Kong and Macau. Ponte Cais No.16 was converted into a cargo terminal as Mr. Ho took over the gambling rights in 1962. In 2002, SJM built the Ponte 16 Resort on the original Ponte Cais No.16 for development. Since from that time, Ponte Cais No.16 didn’t function as a port any more.

 

Based on the interviews with communities and analysis of the data obtained, I believe that Ponte Cais No.16 reconstruct into a hotel will not be a great help to Inner Harbour area. Ponte 16 Resort has been built for many years, but the area is still slowly into the depression, the hotel was dragged into trouble. Perhaps the key to the recovery of Inner Habour is not spending money on new buildings or hotels, but to put the pier back into operation and revitalize it so that residents can once again congregate here because of its prosperity.

16號碼頭

位於新馬路與內港交界地帶的16號碼頭是是澳門最出名的碼頭之一。在百多年前,它是輸出苦力和進出口鴉片的主要碼頭。據記載,在1569年,葡萄牙商人就將華人拐賣為苦力,賣到古巴,秘魯等地。在同時得益于明清時期的海禁政策,澳門成為唯一外國人可以久居和貿易的口岸。因此,葡萄牙人早在1729年就把鴉片從土耳其運到澳門販賣,就連英國人最初也是通過澳門把鴉片賣到中國市場。

 

苦力貿易和鴉片貿易等促進了賭博業的發展,為了管理賭博業,政府設置了博彩專利權。傅德用在1937年獲得博彩專利權,為了方便旅客來賭博,傅德用在1948年出資重建了16號碼頭,16號碼頭由木碼頭變成水泥碼頭,被設計成一個清晰的十字形,靠海面則採用了“底層架空柱”立在水面之上。他同時經營大來輪船,使16號碼頭成為往來港澳旅客的主要碼頭。直到1962年,隨著何鴻燊拿到賭權,16號碼頭被改為貨運碼頭。在2002年,澳門博彩股份有限公司為了發展,在原有的16號碼頭建築上興建了十六浦酒店。自此,碼頭不再運營。

 

通過對社區居民的訪問與所得資料的分析,我認為十六號碼頭被改建為酒店對內港地區的幫助並不大。十六浦酒店已經建成多年,然而內港地區依舊在慢慢走向蕭條,酒店反而被拖入困境之中。或許內港地區走出低谷的關鍵不是花錢重修建築,改建酒店,而是如何將碼頭地區再重新投入運營,使其恢復活力,讓居民再次因為碼頭的繁榮聚集於內港。
