INSTITUTO SALESIANO
The Instituto Salesiano, a school run by the Salesian Society of Bauhaus in Macau, was also the society's first school in the Far East. In 1906, at the invitation of bishop Paulino of the Catholic diocese of Macau, the Salesian Church, headquartered in Italy, sent father Luigi Versiglia to Macau to preach and run a school. Father Luigi Versiglia set sail from Italy to Macau in the same year and started Salesian society's career in China. Father Luigi Versiglia initially in a two floors tall wooden building, opened a "virgin Mary without original sin" named orphanage. The number of students continued to rise, and the school buildings were unable to fulfill needs. Thanks to the bishop's decision, the building, located at Rua de S. Lourenco No.16, had been designated as a new school building. The building had a low wall in front and four sets of twin columns on each side of the main door, a total of 16 columns. The building was owned by the East India Company in the 19th century. Later, the building and its location were repossessed by the government of Macau. The Catholic diocese of Macau gave the building to the priest, and the first Salesian school in the Far East was established, the college of sinless craftsmanship.
In 1910, in order to enable students learn skills to make a living, the school began to set up woodworking, sewing, footwear, typesetting, printing, nailing and other six craft courses, as a vocational school. In 1932, it was expanded into a full secondary school (form 1 to form 5). Due to the expansion, the sixteen columns were dismantled before 1935. In 1952, it was renamed Salesian high school after the same name as the Portuguese school, which is still in use today.
Although Instituto Salesiano is more than hundred years, it should have many history and memory for students or communities. Actually, people don’t have special memory for it and they think that it’s not important. So that in the graph, it shows the memory and history in the middle range. It shows that this building does not acquire high value for memory and history among communities which implies that this building hasn’t value for keep it and it can easily to remove it.
