FON WONG HOUSING BLOCK
The Fon Wong Housing Block is located at the intersection of Rua da Ressurreição and Rua de Santo António. It is adjacent to the Macau's landmark, Ruins of St. Paul's, and facing Largo da Companhia de Jesus. It was designed and built in 1966 by Macau's local architect Jose Maeniras.
In the 1950s, some Portuguese designers arrived Macau, they liked the multi-culture atmosphere and wanted to show their talents. At first, the locals thought that everyone can design buildings. Later, their ability was gradually recognized, creating a new era of "architectural architecture" in Macau. Several Macanese architects have emerged at that time. Jose Maeniras is one of them. His works emphasize the housing quality and residents' lives and somehow related to the city culture. The design of this building is also linked to the surrounding environment: the side nearing the stone steps of the Ruins of St. Paul's is designed as a lower building. In order to match with the existing Chinese houses nearby, the roof is inclined and made of tile. Jose Maeniras believed that the installation of windows on the façade facing Largo da Companhia de Jesus creates visual disturbances, so instead stairs are built there.
Since its completion, the Fon Wong Housing Block is used as a residential building, and many police families lived there. Now, because the building is close to the famous attraction, Ruins of St. Paul with massive tourists and narrow alleys, it is inconvenient for residents to travel, and their daily lives are seriously affected. Most of the young households have moved out and most occupants still living in there are the elderly.
Regarding the future of this building, I think we should respect residents' opinions and keep it as a house, but we should improve living facilities to provide more convenience for residents, especially the elderly, such as considering whether there are conditions to install elevators. The flow of tourists around should also be controlled, such as limiting the flow of visitors or dividing certain areas of separation for residential buildings to ensure the living quality of residents.
